Churches

From the earliest days of Christianity there has been a sizable Armenian community in Tabriz, and the city boasts a number of churches, including one mentioned by Marco Polo on his travels that you can add it to your Tabriz tour or Iran tour.

Nowadays, Tabriz has six churches, the most important of which are: Saint Serkis Church, located in Armenian quarter of Tabriz, Baron Avak, which was renovated in 1845; probably the most interesting and the oldest but substantially rebuilt Church of St. Mary (Kelesa-ye Maryam-e Moghaddas) which was completed in 1785, on the corner of North Shari-ati Ave. and Jomhuri Ave; Able Mary Church which was built in 1910 and is on Miar Miar quarter of Tabriz.

Armenian Church, Tabriz

Saint Mary's Armenian Church

The Saint Mary's Armenian church is an Armenian Christian church located in Tabriz, East Azerbaijan Province,Iran. It is the largest and oldest Christian church in Tabriz and a notable centre for Armenian national and religious ceremonies held by the Armenian community of Tabriz. The church is located in the Dik Bashi district of Tabriz.

This church was built in the 6th century AH (12th century AD) and in his travel chronicles, Marco Polo, the famous Venetian traveler who lived during the 8th century AH (14th century AD), referred to this church on his way to China. For many years, Saint Mary's served as the seat of the Azarbaijan Armenian archbishop. It is a handsomely built edifice, with annex buildings sprawled over a large area. A board of Armenian peers governs the well-attended church.

Catholic Church of Tabriz

The Catholic Church (Mighty Ezra) belongs to Iran's Catholic Christian community. It was built in 1912 and is located in the Mearmear of Tabriz. The church, built with a brick facade, measures 30 meters high by 15 meters wide with the bell tower located on a small balcony.

Saint Stepanos Church in Jolfa

The St. Stepanos Monastery or Monastery of St. Stephen the Protomartyr is an Armenian monastery about 15 km northwest of Jolfa city, East Azarbaijan Province northwest Iran. It was built in the 9th century and rebuilt in the Safavid era after several earthquakes damaged it. It is situated in a deep canyon along the Arax river on the Iranian side of the border between Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Iran.
